Temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome TMJD – The perspective from a special stream of dentistry

Course Objectives & Contents

It is believed that 25-30% of the population, some 25 million people in America, are affected by TMJD.

TMJD often presents with a broad array of unspecific signs and symptoms, ranging from head and neck and facial pain, jaw locking, clicking, soreness, dizziness, low back pain, ear pain and more. Most of the sufferers are misdiagnosed, usually by more than one health practitioner, and provided with inappropriate treatment of little clinical benefit. Most of the patients may become chronic pain sufferers, and in distress with emotional and physical ramifications.

This condition is often not clearly defined among clinicians since the musculo-skeleto-occlusal signs cross over into multiple areas involving dental structures, general body postures, masticatory, occlusal, temporomandibular joints, as well as biochemical and emotional (CNS) levels of this disorder. Most of the patients are with special facial features, and those signs present early in childhood facial development.

The seminar will demonstrate clinical and radiological interpretations. These will include the aid of sophisticated instruments and will help to divide the condition in different categories and to better understand how to address the root cause (sometimes there can be overlapping problems). Dr Lee will also share the interrelationship on how the occlusion can affect the spinal alignment and how the body posture can affect the bite.

Instructor

Dr Stanley K L Lee started his career in dentistry in 1993. After 7 years of general practice, he received his first postgraduate Master’s Degree in prosthodontics (Oral rehabilitation) in King’s College London. On the creation of an ideal smile: ’pink cosmetic’- the gum line contour is also crucial. He attained the specialty training in Periodontology in Hong Kong, which includes the plastic surgery of the gum and also the treatment of gum disease. In dealing with cases with refractory periodontal problems and complex dental reconstruction cases, he fully understands that in order to achieve a long term successful outcome, it is about good general health through a holistic approach, rather than a single sophisticated procedure. He is particularly interested in solving complicated problems by joining the dots which initially seem unrelated.
